Attention Skateboarding Computer Geeks

Filed under: Website Stuff — Nealio @ 11:28 am

Do you know how to build a website and use an ftp program? If so, you can have your very own site hosted here at Small Time Skates! (If you only know how to use Frontpage, I can set something up for you as well, but Dreamweaver + ftp is a way better route to take). If you’re interested, give me a shout using the contact page, and I’ll set you up. You can have your own smalltimeskates.com email address, and you can use the photo gallery to host your pics! You have to be a skater, or at least someone whose life revolves around skateboarding (filmers, photographers, etc). We’ll link you on the main page and help you get seen. Hit me up!

We Need to Keep the Park Clean

Filed under: Opinion — Nealio @ 10:11 am

Our very own Josh Ew Uhh has commented on this before (click here), now there’s a good thread in the forums about the very same thing. Now we have police involved in the matter.
If we really love the place, we need to treat it that way. If we’re willing to get our hands dirty by riding the park, we need to be willing to get our hands dirty while cleaning it. Let’s do our part… if not so we can say “thanks” to the city for helping us get this park, then at least so we don’t get our wheels caught on a Gatorade bottle.

Stay small.

If you can make to one or both of these demos, do it! We have to show some support to the local companies… Shawn and his crew have been holding it down for a long time now, so give ‘em props and watch these fellas ride… Aminal has a seriously great team.

MySpace Headz…

Filed under: Video, Website Stuff — Nealio @ 9:54 pm

I don’t know if it’s something in the air or what, but we’ve been getting a lot of adds lately on our MySpace page… which is very bad ass.

On a completely unrelated note, check this out… it’s a flatland freestyle skateboarding comp that was held in England in 2005 (roughly 48 minutes long). Some of you might think that freestlye is a bit odd, and you may be right, but you have to remember that nearly every flip/tech trick we do today is because of this form of skating. Up until the late 80’s, freestyle was pretty big here in the US, but it wound up becoming a part of street style… though there are still a few people in the US that practice flatland freestyle, it’s all but died here. It’s neat seeing this particular skate discipline alive and well in Europe. These skaters may be the pocket-protector wearing practitioners of skating, but they’re also the architects of more advanced tricks. I especially dig freestyle because of its purity… just a skater and a board, nothing else.

Oh yeah, and Rodney Mullen is a mad man.

Wintessed Yesterday…

Filed under: Random — Nealio @ 7:17 am

1. Corey Chaos, Little Kerry and Big Trey doing huge airs over two stacked garbage cans (one can standing, one laying sideways on top of that one) out of the quarterpipe.

2. Khars landing a frontside ollie to revert, and a bs kickflip in the bowl.

3.  Michael Holden, 5/6 ft cess slides on the vert wall in the bowl (SKRRRRRRRRKKK!).

4. Little Randy rolling with endless lines in the bowl… and making sure noone was caught pushing in it. I must mention the fact that Randy can probably beat you at S K A T E.

As much fun as this thing looks like it’d be, I’m really glad our bowl is mellow…

Not because I’m gangsta, but because they’re geeky (in a gangsta sort of way).

Kick it Old School (Some Videos from Jilt3d)

Filed under: Video — Nealio @ 7:26 am

Jilt3d just sent me some amazing, if not slightly aged footage… watching these is like hopping in a time machine.

This first one isn’t skate related, but it’s bad ass (and the most recent)… it’s Mr. Jilt and some friends riding trials-steez on mountain bikes.

A classic skate video… if not because of some of the names in the video, then because of how amazingly cheezy everyone is in it. I’m not knocking it by any means, I own a VHS copy of this flick and I’ve watched it about a trillion times. The 80’s were just so fun… plus a fella could get away with wearing fluorescent green “come get me” shorts. I’ll end my commentary on the decade and give you the toxin…

If you’re under 20 years of age, you may not be aware that “Powell” used to be “Powell Peralta”. Way back in the day, before most of you were born, George Powell and Stacey Peralta formed one of the largest and most solid companies to ever exist in skateboarding. While both men ran the company, Stacey had one special talent that went beyond his own ability to ride a board… he made great skate videos. All of the skate vids that Stacey churned out are classics… especially this one:

If you made it this far, then you’re in for a very special treat… and it’s my favorite video post out of the whole stash. Before I give it to you, I gotta tell you younger cats that Small Times wasn’t Hammond’s first skate shop, nor was the Chicken Coop Hammond’s first skatepark… see, back in the 80’s, a place called Ribando’s was half skateshop & park/ half electrical supply company… it was a weird mix… you could go in and buy a skateboard, a skate shirt, and a power inverter. Ribando’s is still around, but they’ve long since stopped selling skateboards. Sadly, they no longer have the mammoth vert ramp that used to reside on the side of the place… that ramp was the first piece of vert I ever dropped in on. Ok, on to the video… this is footage that Jilt3d had of Ken Park (a big name vert pro back in the day) skating for the locals many years ago. If you don’t watch any other videos ever, watch this and see that Hammond has always had a skateboard fixation (it just didn’t always know it).
